Manservice with the Lars by viciousSHADi Manservice with the Lars by viciousSHADi
I should probably space out the frequency in which I post my Tekken fanart, but it's my devArt page so there. :P Plus, I promised someone at Animazement that I would post this on my page.

There is an actual reason this was made, and it's not because I really like drawing Lars and hot bods or anything (well, they are reasons, but not THE reason). I had recently acquired some inkjet Moleskine paper (hence the yellowish hue), and wanted to dabble with it. I must say; I'm a fan of it. c: With Lars himself, I'm trying to find ways to make his hair look less anime, more visual kei. You'll likely see me draw his hair more like this too because honestly, I think this is a creative liberty taken for the better. Also, the leaner build is another liberty; his muscle structure is so overdone and too bulky for someone who fights like he does. :T So again; doing my own thing though I might make him a little less "waify" next time.

I like your take on Lars a lot, as you already know but I figure I could leave more thoughts on WHY I like your take on him so much here than in Twitter limitations!

I like how you can almost vary his sort of 'look' depending on what you're doing-sometimes you can give him ever-so-slightly older/more mature appearance, or in the more fun light-hearted comics he comes out almost 'cute'. But I think that's awesome since it fits the work. I agree about his build-Lars is a very, very powerful guy(he picks up people like they're a feather and snaps their neck one handed, Lars is a monster XD), but I don't think he's supposed to *look* as bulky as, say, Sergei. (If anything I think if they were going to bulk up Lars for T7, they should have hit his lower body more like they did with Sergei instead of the upper-with all of those jumps he does, you'd think it would have fit more? But yeah, they just sent him to the same gym they sent Law to.)

Also I really dig the VK hair too. I mean Lars' poofy anime hair is cute(and makes for great comics) but I do prefer this. Looks so much more natural. So yeah, your Lars=awesome Lars.

So there I managed to get to praise it a lot in something that wasn't 140 characters! XD

Thank you for such a well-written comment!

One of the first things I noticed about Lars when I played through Scenario Campaign is that he is really expressive, especially given that the other Mishimas have maybe three expressions on them at most. So, how I draw him depends on the setting of the work. The Ask Lars blog takes a more "cute" approach so as to make him more "approachable", most other works I try to play up the fact that he's definitely an adult, but still a person, if that makes any sense.
With his build, he obviously has tone to him, given his military background, but the way he was bulked up in Tekken 7 really bothered me. I do agree that his lower body should have received more muscle as opposed to his arms, especially given his jumping, flipping, Dynamic-Entry-stepping maneuvers!

The poofy anime hair does work, and it definitely has its place. My reasons for changing it were indeed to make it look more natural; that presenting it as such could hopefully convince people to calm down about his hair already. XD

Thank you for the in-depth comment. I take a very particular approach with my favourites, and it's nice to know when someone notices this. c:

I love the evolution your artwork has undergone over the years. It's been a wonderful, graceful climb toward more photorealistic subjects yet simultaneously more and more your own signature style. The result is epic.

And also yes, pretty much most of the Tekken cast could do with being stripped back a few shirt sizes for realism's sake, and your take on it here is pretty damn accurate.

That really means a lot to hear that from you, seeing as you've been following my work since the days before I knew how to anatomy. I've been working a lot harder at improving the overall quality of my work; I attribute this to doing the conventions as the competition has encouraged me to step it up. And to be honest, no matter what medium I dabble in, there's just no replacing pencil and paper. I plan to continue to produce work of this quality!

AGREED. Part of my studying anatomy and body types means that I am really critical of the Tekken designs...the men have gotten ridiculous in terms of muscles. This is definitely a necessary artistic license, and I am glad that you agree.

There's definitely no replacing pencil and paper - shit, my own pencil sketches have gone to the shitter since I started relying more heavily on the computer to save time. Your dedication certainly shows, and I'll bet competition has not only made you more accurate (and more fluid and varied in their poses and expressions; this is something that can only be learned with experience!) but a whole lot faster at pushing out finished pieces. It's just raised quality all around!

Body types is a hugely important thing that just doesn't get enough attention, especially with Tekken (MOAR MUSCLES? MOAR MUSCLES!). I've been thinking about it lately too, ever since a watcher noted something along the lines of one of my characters not having the shoulders to hold up his huge biceps...it really does matter what someone is genetically and structurally predisposed to, as well as what they do with themselves. I mean, the Mishimas can afford to have big arms and shoulders because all they do is punch the shit out of the opposition, but I'd hazard a guess the more fluid and varied (read: less brute force) fighters would be leaner and differently defined. The cream of your followers would certainly appreciate this extra level of detail you're putting into it, it's immensely satisfying to see.

As I continuously hone my skills on the computer and with colouring in general, I keep finding myself returning to my pencil and paper, simply because I can put out my absolutely best work with these seemingly "simple" tools.
Dedication to the craft helps, as well as the healthy competition I have with my friends--it's definitely allowed me to become more efficient, and to be more critical of what I put into my art. There's a huge difference between what I'm putting out now compared to what I was putting out even three years ago. Again, I'm so glad a veteran like yourself is noticing these improvements as I really feel like I'm making progress.

Body types have become a very big deal to me these days, and I'm making it a point to design each character as such (and in the case of working on Tekken stuff, redesigning them to give each character their appropriate body type. Mishimas having big arms makes perfect sense, but characters like Hwoarang and Lei shouldn't be so bulky.). It's very important to implement this sort of thing, and I'm glad that you've been taking notice of this yourself (you've always been very receptive of feedback, of course!). I think you're right that my followers will definitely appreciate the extra effort, since I know some of them have expressed their grievances over seeing favourite characters with improper body types!

 I figured you'd really appreciate the higher-quality version!

It was great to see you at the Animazement, too! I always look forward to seeing you there since I know you have an appreciation for the finer things ^.~
I had hoped to have new pretty men artwork proper this year, but I guess that means I'll just have to bring a whole lot more for next year! :giggle:

If anyone can tame that sexy beast, I'll be amazed! He's seen all kinds of action, and I mean that in every sense of the word.

I would love for there to be a Lars sent to my house; though you'd definitely get more mileage out of him than me; I'd just want him to be my assistant! :lmao:

I'm glad that you enjoy talking with me! Like I said, I always look forward to seeing you at AZ. You're one of the reasons I keep coming back!

Oh! And I should have an update for you on your commission soon! :D
